Lunar rocks from Apollo missions shed fresh light on the birth of the moon

Analysis of lunar rocks brought back to Earth by the Apollo 11, 12 and 16 missions have revealed small but distinctive chemical signatures within which suggest that the moon was formed when a Mars-sized planet violently slammed into Earth over 4.5 billion years ago.
