Update on Galileo launch injection anomaly

On August 22nd, two Galileo navigation satellites were placed into the incorrect orbit around Earth following their launch, however the satellites have now deployed their solar arrays and are, reportedly, in good health.

Despite the non-nominal orbit, the satellites are safely under control and in-flight operations are continuing smoothly for the Galileo duo. Both satellites now have both sets of their solar arrays fully deployed and are generating power.

European Space Agency ground controllers, in cooperation with the satellite manufacturer OHB, have confirmed the good health and the nominal behaviour of both satellites

Both satellites continue to be kept in a safe state, correctly pointing to the Sun, properly powered and fully under control of the ESA’s control centre, however teams are now investigating how to use, and operate, the satellites with limited propulsion capabilities.

Different management scenarios will be assessed with the hopes that the duo can still operate successfully, however if not, a recovery mission may be necessary.
