This twisted blob of solar material – a hot, charged gas known as plasma – was captured erupting off the side of the Sun by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory earlier this week.

SDO’s mission is to study how solar activity is created and how space weather is produced and affected by the Sun. It will achieve this by measuring the interior of the Sun, the Sun’s magnetic field and the hot plasma of the solar corona.
